How to activate the multi user / router functionality of a Thomson ST 546v6

As I said in a previous blog (Telekom Austria und neues ADSL Modem - Speedtouch 546 v6) posting I'm going to write a small tutorial which explains how to upgrade the firmware of a Thomson ST 546v6 and to use the built-in router feature of the "modem".

Telekom Austria disables the setup wizard of the modem why it is not possible to reconfigure the modem using the web interface. They provide a little tool called "modem configurator" which is a part of the aonController program and which can be used to switch from single user to multi user mode. However this tool can only be used by Telekom Austria customers and I think it does not work for other people like me who have a different provider (in my case UPC/Inode) but are still using Telekom Austria's equipment. Indeed I would not like to use those crappy tools which are provided by Telekom Austria and furthermore I wanted the upgrade the modem's firmware to the latest stable version.

Österreich will heimliche Online-Durchsuchung 2008 einführen

Ich habe die entsprechenden News gerade zuvor auf heise.de gelesen und ich glaube noch nicht was ich da lesen muss:

Das Instrument der heimlichen Online-Durchsuchung durch die Polizei soll in Österreich ab Herbst 2008 eingesetzt werden können. Darauf haben sich laut einem Bericht des Radiosenders Ö1 die österreichische Justizministerin Maria Berger (SPÖ) und ihr Innenminister Günther Platter (ÖVP) geeignet.

Ich dachte mir urspruenglich eigentlich, dass oesterreichische Politiker nicht so dumm wie bestimmte deutsche Politiker (e.g. Wolfgang S. oder nennen wir in lieber W. Schaeuble) sind und dieser idiotischen "Bundestrojaner" Idee nicht (so schnell) folgen werden. Aber was soll man von einem Ex-Polizisten als Innenminister auch erwarten? Ja unser Innenminister ist mehr oder weniger vom Polizisten zum Verteidigungsminister aufgestiegen und danach zum Innenminister geworden. Welche Qualifikationen ein Polizist fuer den Posten als Verteidigungs- oder gar Innenminister mitbringt verstehe ich zwar bis heute nicht aber das ist ein anderes Thema.

Telekom Austria und neues ADSL Modem (Speedtouch 546 v6)

Letzens hat mein altgedientes ADSL-Modem (Speedtouch 510), welches ich vor ~6 Jahren von der Telekom Austria zur Verfuegung gestellt bekommen habe, den Geist aufgegeben. Inzwischen habe ich zwar den Provider gewechselt, allerdings ist die TA nachwievor fuer die Geraete zustaendig. Dank etwas Vitamin B hatte ich auch schon am naechsten Tag um 11 Uhr einen Techniker der Telekom zu Hause, der das alte Modem durch ein neues Modell ausgetauscht hat. An dieser Stelle sollte ich wohl noch erwaehnen, dass es sich bei diesem Speedtouch Geraet nicht um ein reines Modem, sondern um einen voll funktionsfaehigen Router, handelt. Bei dem alten Modell konnte man die Zugangsdaten des Providers ueber das Webinterface einstellen, damit sich das "Modem" selbst einwaehlt und man nicht von dem Rechner aus eine VPN-Verbinung herstellen muss.

The Serendipity team released the final version of Serendipity 1.2 today. I just upgraded to 1.2 and everything went as smooth and easy as usual.

The Serendipity Team is proud to present the final release and immediate availability of Serendipity 1.2.

This release is a feature consolidation release and focuses on small usability improvements, a shiny new template (bulletproof) as well as backend templating and backend login mechanisms as well as some tighter security restrictions.

Letztes Wochenende war ich

Spieldfeld

zusammen mit Freunden und Kollegen von Freunden (insgesamt 10 Leute davon 4 Maedels und 6 Maenner) Paintball spielen. Gespielt haben wir im Freien auf einem 30x60 Meter grossen Feld (siehe Bild links). Das Feld liegt bei Rietz, Tirol und wird genauso wie die Ausruestung (Luftdruckpistole genannt Markierer und Gesichtsmaske) von dem Verein Skull Paintball zur Verfuegung gestellt. Ich kann an dieser Stelle schon einmal sagen, dass es einfach Hammer war!

Die 10 Leute wurden zufaellig in Teams von 5 Leuten aufgeteilt und starteten auf der jeweils gegenueberliegenden Seite (eine Mannschaft oben, die andere unten) des Spielfeldes. Beim Paintball gibt es verschiedene Spielvarianten, wie Capture The Flag, Center Flag und Team Deathmatch, wobei wir uns auf Team Deathmatch beschraenkt haben, was bedeutet, dass alle Personen des gegnerischen Teams markiert werden muessen.

As you may already noticed I published two new advisories (Winamp 5.35 (Infinite) M3U File Inclusion Stack Overflow Exception respectively DoS Vulnerability in Konqueror 3.5.7) and replaced Wordpress with a good[TM] weblog software named Serendipity.

Actually, I wanted to replace Wordpress since the beginning of this year (I'll explain the reasons for this decision in another blog posting) but I did not have enough time (and at least mind to) convert my customized Wordpress theme into a Serendipity theme until now.

Basshunter - Boten Anna

Das Lied ist ja nicht mehr wirklich neu (vom Mai 2006 IIRC) aber bei uns wurde dieses in der letzten Zeit wieder oefters gespielt. Ich muss sagen, dass es mir auch wirklich gefaellt, weil es sehr meinem Musikgeschmack (Trance, Dance, House) entspricht. Man versteht zwar nichts von dem Text, sofern man kein Schwedisch spricht, allerdings habe ich mir gleich gedacht, dass der Text nichts besonders einfallsreich sein kann aber, dass er so billig ist haette ich mir nicht gedacht.

Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato firmware

Last week I replaced my PC router (133MHz, 32MB RAM, 0,9 GB HD) with a Linksys WRT54GL hardware router. The old Slackware box had done a great job for several years now but the time had come to exchange the old machine with a new one. The router's hard disk had a lot of bad blocks the last weeks wherefore I believed that the hard disk's end was near. So I had the choice between using another PC or buying a hardware router.. I decided to purchase a hardware box because I need all my computers for other tasks and this time I wanted to have a soundless router (the old PC was very quiet but not soundless) which does not need a lot of power.

Strange pings and broken Windows services

Letzens habe ich ein Notebook in die Hand gedrueckt bekommen, bei welchem das "Internet nicht funktioniert" hat. Bei dem "Internet" handelte es sich um einen UMTS HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) Zugang, welcher ueber ein Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Modem hergestellt wird. Der Benutzer hatte das Paket zuvor schon nach Anleitung mehrmals in- und deinstalliert gehabt und zu meiner Ueberraschung war dies wirklich der Fall. Die Hardware wurde erkannt und man konnte sich ohne weiteres einwaehlen, allerdings war es nicht moeglich per Browser Webseiten aufzurufen. Mein erster Gedanke war daraufhin, dass es ein Problem mit der DNS-Aufloesung gab, weshalb ich erstmal diverse Kommandos wie `ping', `nslookup' ausgefuehrt habe.

Today I will fly ...

... to Paris!!! The last days I visited the German branches to get to know the important co-workers in the German division/departments. I don't have own internet access until now - hopefully this will change in the next days. Tomorrow I will get to know my boss in Paris he will show me the office etc. on Sunday because he will be unavailable for Monday/Tuesday. I will get a laptop (French keyboard *aarrghhh*) then too. My laptop with a German keyboard is ordered - its only a matter of time now. I will write a longer blog entry once I have an own laptop and internet access.

I'm scared ^H^H^H happy ... ;)

Don't get me wrong I am really looking forward to work in Paris but until NOW I don't have any information where I have to go. I won't have internet access in my apartment beginning tomorrow morning. I don't have tickets for planes nor hotel reservations. I am not addicted to the Internet - I can stop any time *shiver*! EVERYTHING WILL WORK! :D

There is only ONE good thing actually! Because I will leave Germany and take everything with me I cancelled my GEZ membership. The GEZ is the German "GebuehrenEinzugsZentrale" and is a Mafia ^HH^H government institution to steal your money for TV and Radio stuff you don't use.
